Vintage Majolica Frog Basketweave Lidded Bowl

Okay, the frogs hugging on top absolutely got me! This is exactly what I want a vintage find to be: quirky, beautiful and something you aren’t going to see everywhere. The watery aqua glaze is fabulous, but those two little frogs are the whole moment.

DESCRIPTION

A wonderfully whimsical vintage majolica lidded bowl featuring a pair of sculptural green frogs perched together atop the lid.

The rounded bowl and coordinating lid are molded in a detailed basketweave pattern and finished in a beautiful watery aqua-blue glaze. Deeper green glazing accents the rope-style borders, while the dimensional frogs are rendered in shades of green and creamy white with expressive painted eyes.

The contrast between the traditional basketweave form and wonderfully unexpected frog finial makes this such a special decorative object. It’s playful without feeling juvenile and has exactly the sort of character that makes vintage pieces so much fun to collect.

At approximately 9.5 inches tall, this is a substantial piece with enough presence to stand beautifully on a console, coffee table, bookshelf, kitchen island or bar. Use it as a decorative covered bowl or simply let those fabulous frogs have their moment.

No maker’s mark has been identified, so we have intentionally not attributed the piece to a particular manufacturer or period.

As with all of our vintage and found pieces, variations in glaze, surface markings, crazing, small imperfections and evidence of previous use may be present.
